When To Consider A Packing Service When Moving

A full-service move can make the process much easier, but it's not for everyone. If you need to save some cash, then you may be thinking of skipping the packing service. The fact is that you don't have to have the packers box up everything. Taking advantage of professional packing for some items can still make your move easier, but it won't cost as much as having your entire home packed. The following are a few things you should consider hiring the movers to pack.

Computers and electronics

Whether it's your computer setup or a home theater and stereo system, the packers may be a better option than trying to do it yourself. Most movers will use static-free packing materials and plenty of padding, ensuring that your items are safe during the move. Some services now also offer setup service, which means they will get your computer or theater system set up and ready to use after moving you in—so you won't have to mess with a tangle of cords and instruction books.

Books and papers

If you have a lot of books and papers, let the movers pack them up. Not only is it tedious to pack box after box of heavy books, but it can also pose a problem for your movers. Overloaded book boxes are hard to lift and carry, and they can also make it difficult to properly distribute weight in the truck. Your movers will know how to best pack the books so the boxes are manageable for carrying and transport. The only exception is certain important paperwork, such as birth certificates, property deeds, and financial records, which you should move yourself to ensure their safety.

Fragile items

Fragile items that aren't irreplaceable are another thing that movers can pack more securely than you are likely to. This includes things like kitchen dishware as well as nick-knacks or items with fragile parts, such as specialty lamps. The movers have the experience and knowledge to make sure these items are packaged safely. The only exception is things that are very expensive or that you can't replace – these you should pack yourself and move in your own vehicle.

Specialty furniture

Think pianos, grandfather clocks, or other pieces that must be prepared for transport and then moved carefully. Not all movers have the knowledge or skills to handle the packing of these items, so you may need to call around to find a mover that does.
